Fruit and vegetables in Germany - statistics & facts
There is a lot to say about fruit and vegetables in Germany. The country relies both on its own agriculture to cover national demand, as well as imports. The leading supplier countries for fresh fruit on the German market were all located in the European Union, among them Spain and Italy. Both of these countries have longer periods of warm weather and generally milder climates in some regions compared to Germany, which makes it possible to grow and harvest certain types of fruit, citrus being a common example. Fruit and vegetables alike are used fresh and consumed as such where possible, and they are also a massive part of the churning industry of fruit and vegetable processing. Juice, jams, sauces, baby food - the list goes on and on. The next question on consumers' minds is, of course, just how much fruit was used in manufacturing processed products in relation to other, not necessarily healthy ingredients. Per capita consumption of fruit decreased somewhat in recent years, with around 66.6 kilograms recorded in 2023/24. The most consumed fruits by far were apples, followed by bananas and grapes.
