Agriculture in Portugal - statistics & facts
Despite being a small country in landmass, Portugal has a diverse agricultural sector due to varied climacteric and topographic characteristics. Moreover, it possesses a large exclusive economic zone (EEZ), which allows the country to explore marine resources. As of 2024, the Portuguese agricultural industry had a production value of 11.8 billion euros, the majority of which originated from crop farming. However, due to inconstant levels of rainfall and high temperatures, especially south of the Tagus River, the industry faces limitations, which may explain why its gross value added represented only 2.4 percent of the gross domestic product in 2023.
