Israeli-Palestinian conflict - statistics & facts
The war in Gaza is the latest escalation of the conflict between the Israeli and the Palestinians. The core of the conflict goes back to the establishment of the Israeli state for Jewish people on parts of the territory belonging to the British Mandate of Palestine in 1948. This conflict resulted in three major wars between Israel and the adjoining Arab states, and the consequent annexing of the Gaza Strip and West Bank by Israel. Although the Israeli government declared that it unitarily vacated the Gaza Strip in 2005, from the perspective of the Palestinians in Gaza it was the beginning of a siege, as Israel continued to control the land and the flow of goods and people that could enter or exit the Palestinian exclave.
