Maritime ports in India - statistics & facts
India has more than 7.5 thousand kilometers of coastline, one of the longest in the world. Nevertheless, the country has yet to fully utilize its potential in the maritime transportation industry. Even though India is a country with a substantial economy and is located at the intersection of one of the busiest shipping routes in the world, it lagged behind both in developing maritime ports and ocean shipping. However, over the last decade, through continuous investments from both public and private sectors, Indian ports observed a steady growth in the volume of freight, despite the decrease in freight volume in financial year 2021 caused by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
