Railway industry in India - statistics & facts
The first train in India had run more than half a century before the country saw a single car. In the first half of the 19th century, India saw limited use of locomotives for short-distance hauling of construction materials. On April 16, 1853, the country’s first passenger train ran between Bori Bunder, part of present-day Mumbai, and Thane, a town just outside Mumbai. The run distance was 34 kilometers, and the train could carry around 400 passengers. It was not until the end of the 19th century that cars started to appear on the Indian roads.
