2024 was a tough year for the global art market. While sales rebounded strongly after being hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, the value of the global art market saw a significant decline over the past two years. Global economic and political uncertainty has particularly hurt high-end transactions, with the total market’s value falling to under 58 billion U.S. dollars in 2024, the second-lowest figure since the onset of the pandemic.
Despite the decrease in sales, Sotheby’s and Christie’s led by a wide margin in a ranking of the leading auction houses worldwide based on revenue in 2024. That year, other major players like Heritage Auctions, Bonhams, and Phillips all generated sales below two billion U.S. dollars.
