Electric vehicles in Portugal - Statistics & facts
In June 2022, Portugal was one of five European countries proposing to postpone the European Union deadline for reducing light vehicle carbon dioxide emissions by five years, with the aim to reduce them by 100 percent by 2040 instead of 2035. Portugal's annual greenhouse gas emissions from fuel combustion in the transport sector amounted to around 14.83 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2020, and the country has set targets to decarbonize transportation. As part of this plan, the government increasingly relies on the sale of hybrid and fully electric vehicles, which have lower to no direct emissions. Plug-in electric vehicle sales represented just under a quarter of Portugal's total passenger car sales, including an 11.4 percent market share for battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). This total share of electric vehicle (EV) sales was higher than the European market share as well as Spain's EV sales share.
