This report presents an array of statistics on the retail store closures in the United States, before and after the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The first chapter gives an overview of the retail industry, including the share of e-commerce as a proportion of total retail sales. It further gives information on bankruptcies in the retail industry that took place over the last decade, as well as recently following the pandemic. The second chapter provides store openings and closures data up to 2019. In the third chapter, more data is available on retail companies that had to close stores as a result of post-pandemic financial struggles. Finally, the fourth chapter gives key figures on employment for various sectors and roles of the retail industry in the United States.
