In the fall of 2024, over 5.2 million college students were enrolled exclusively in distance education courses through postsecondary institutions in the United States. A further 5.54 million students were enrolled in at least one distance education course in that year. This high level of enrollment in distance education courses was due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
