Sustainability of Singapore's vehicle fleet

Over the same year, around ** thousand cars were less than a year old, indicating a relatively young fleet. The Certificate of Eligibility (COE) system, introduced in May 1990, has played a key role in regulating the car fleet. Despite this, gasoline-powered cars still account for the largest share of cars in the city-state, with a total of about *** thousand vehicles. Although this proportion has fallen slightly over time, petrol-powered cars remain the most popular choice. Looking ahead, Singapore remains committed to phasing out internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and aims to switch to cleaner energy sources for all vehicles by 2040.
