As of 2018, the most widespread type of electric vehicle in Italy were passenger cars. An estimated * units were in use in the country, considering both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). By comparison, there were light-duty electric vehicles and electric motorbikes in circulation. However, the number of e-cars accounted for less than one percent of the total cars in use in the country.
