In contrast, Western regions were among the most desired travel destinations, with Hawaii, France, and Italy leading the ranking.

A commonly stated reason against future travel plans was the financial burden that comes with the purchase of travel products. Therefore, regions in close proximity to the archipelago such as South Korea and Taiwan are typically popular destinations for short and affordable trips.

Despite the low participation in travel activities, the trend in Japanese residents going overseas exhibited a steady growth in recent years. Gender distributions reveal that men were making up the largest share of Japanese outbound travelers in the last decade, but the gender gap is shrinking as young adults are showing an increasing interest in overseas travel destinations.
