As of June 2026, Samsung had around percent share in the mobile vendor market in Malaysia. Apart from Apple, more and more Android-based smartphones were able to increase their market share over the past few years. The reason for their success is not only their strong performance but also Samsung’s declining market share. The Android market has become more open, and trust in well-established brands has shrunk. In addition, lesser-known smartphone brands like Oppo have conquered the market with low-priced smartphones to meet the demand of people with smaller incomes. 

Launch of fifth-generation technologies

In 2024, Maxis, Malaysia’s second-largest telecommunications provider, announced that it has signed an agreement with Huawei Technologies to launch a fifth-generation (5G) telecommunications network when the technology becomes available. Last year, Telekom Malaysia, in collaboration with Huawei Technologies, introduced TM ONE Cloud, which offers cloud, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, cloud operations, and cloud AI infrastructure services.

Huawei’s initiatives during the COVID-19 pandemic

Apart from collaboration with telecommunication providers, Huawei has also collaborated with the Malaysian government. In an effort to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, Huawei Malaysia has donated four technology solutions to the Ministry of Health. The solutions enable healthcare experts to work with frontline medical professionals to conduct online consultations and enhance the effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment. In this period, buyers of Huawei’s MateX were also offered free delivery services, an added incentive to purchasing Huawei.
