Print media subscriptions and global context
 
The story is slightly different for printed newspapers; in the same year, ** percent of each age bracket said they had paid for printed newspapers. However, in line with trends across the world, the Australian retail market for newspapers and printed books has witnessed a yearly drop in turnover. Turnover was less than billion Australian dollars for the first time in 2018.
News subscriptions and media brand trust
 
Australians with either a physical or digital news subscription is comparatively small. The largest share was from older generations; ** percent of those in the mature age bracket had a subscription whereas only *** percent of trailing millennials had one.
Trust in media brands in Australia is generally very high; ** percent of respondents to a 2020 survey said they trusted ABC news and ** percent said they trusted SBS news. When it came to newspapers, ** percent said they trusted regional and local newspapers.
