*Figures until 2011 represent the sum of the number of alien registrations who stayed in Japan with the status of residence eligible for mid to long-term residents. Numbers from 2012 onwards represent the number of foreign residents, adding together mid to long-term residents and special permanent residents.
In 2023, approximately ** foreign residents from Brazil were living in Japan, representing an increase from the previous year. Many foreign residents from Brazil are so-called nikkeijin, descendants of Japanese emigrants, who return to Japan for employment reasons. Numbers declined after the global financial crisis of 2007 and 2008, but slightly recovered recently.
