The number of Venezuelan citizens applying to be officially recognized as refugees in Brazil peaked in 2018, when the South American country documented a total of 61,681 claims from Venezuelans. After a sharp decline from 2019 to 2020, partly due to the end of the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, the volume of refugee claims has increased, and in 2024 there were 27,150 claims.
