In 2018, wind plants accounted for ** percent of the new installed capacity coming from renewable sources in Italy. In the same year, photovoltaics represented ** percent of the installed capacity, whereas hydropower and biomass accounted for ** and six percent of it, respectively.  

Wind and solar power

It does not come as a surprise that wind power and photovoltaics dominated the scene in terms of new installed capacity. Over the last few years, wind and photovoltaic cumulative installed capacity steadily increased. Apulia was the Italian region with the greatest installed capacity, regarding both wind plants and photovoltaic systems. Also, pertaining to photovoltaics, Italy was among the leading markets worldwide for energy capacity additions.

Government role in boosting renewable energy in Italy

With reference to the role of the government in implementing renewable energy in Italy, it may be stated that Italians are in favor of more incentives to boost the use of renewable sources. In a survey conducted in 2018, only seven percent of respondents declared that the government should abolish incentives aimed at fostering renewable energy , because it has already been implemented enough.
