Measured using the score from the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), a nine item
depression-screening instrument that asks about the frequency of symptoms of depression
in the past 2 weeks. Response categories of 鈥渘ot at all,鈥 鈥渟everal days,鈥 鈥渕ore than half the
days,鈥 and 鈥渘early every day鈥 are given a score of 0 to 3. Summary scores ranged from 0 to 27.
Depression was defined using a score of 10 or higher, a well-validated cut point used in primary
care settings.
