Basilicata was the region with the highest level of crude oil production in Italy, with a volume amounting to approximately *** billion kilograms in 2017. The rest of on-shore crude oil production took place in Sicily, Piedmont, Emilia Romagna and Molise. However, in the regions that have just been mentioned, the crude oil production was very low compared to Basilicata. For instance, in Emilia-Romagna the crude oil production amounted to approximately **** million kilograms.  

 Domestic production of crude oil 

The level of domestic production of crude oil remarkably decreased in recent years , even though the decline was not steady over time. In 2005, thousand tons of crude oil were produced in Italy. Then, the production decreased until 2009 before experiencing a constant increase until 2014. In the following years, the domestic output of crude oil dropped again, reaching an all-time low of thousand tons in 2016, before slightly increasing in 2017.

Also, the oil reserves in Italy decreased from *** million barrels in 2011 to *** million barrels in 2017.  Regarding crude oil imports, the Middle East was the main crude oil supplier to Italy. As a matter of fact, the region accounted for **** percent of the total imports in 2017.
