* NSDUH respondents who attempted suicide in the past 12 months were asked if they had been treated medically as a result of a suicide attempt, and subsequently those answering 鈥測es鈥 were asked if they had
stayed in the hospital overnight or longer because of a suicide attempt. Respondents with unknown suicide information were excluded.

This statistic shows the number of adults hospitalized after a suicide attempt in the United States, in 2017 and 2019, by gender. In 2019, some 238 thousand males were hospitalized overnight or longer after attempting suicide, compared to 288 thousand females.
