Monitoring the Future is an ongoing study of the behaviors, attitudes, and values of American secondary school students, college students, and young adults. Each year, a total of approximately 50,000 8th, 10th and 12th grade students are surveyed (12th graders since 1975, and 8th and 10th graders since 1991).

Around one percent of U.S. respondents in grades 8, 10, and 12 in 2025 stated that they used steroids within that year. Steroids are sometimes used illegally by athletes to build muscle and improve athletic performance. Although the percentage of steroid users in the age group has decreased, there has been an upward trend since 2021.
