Major ports are under the union list while the non-major ports are under the concurrent list of the constitution of India. Therefore, major ports are under the administrative control of government of India while the non-major ports are governed by the respective maritime state governments.

Fertilizers traffic at major Indian ports FY 2011-2023
In financial year 2023, the fertilizer traffic across major Indian ports amounted to about 7.89 million metric tons. On a year-over-year basis, there was an increase in growth in this volume by nearly five percent during the financial year of 2023. Almost 70 percent of the country's trading value was handled through maritime transport.
