Lombardy is by far the Italian region with the largest population. 

Landfills and incineration

In 2023, there was still a gap between the South and the rest of Italy regarding the amount of waste sent to landfills for disposal. Indeed, in the North of Italy, landfills were deployed to get rid of roughly *** million tons of waste against *** million tons in the South. The Northern region of Lombardy recorded the highest volume of waste incinerated nationwide.
