In the financial year 2020, more than *** trillion metric tons per kilometer of freight was moved via road transport across India. Over the past two decades, freight movement has steadily grown, increasing almost sixfold, and the road transportation segment has become the dominant method of freight logistics in India.Ìý

National highways

National highways are the backbone of India’s road networks. By the end of the financial year 2024, India had over ** kilometers of national highways. There are close to *** national highways across the country, and they control around ** percent of road traffic. The maintenance and construction of national highways are controlled by the National Highway Authority of India. In the last few years, government budget allocation for roads and highways development has reached historical heights, close to three trillion rupees per year.Ìý

Logistics parks

In order to improve the efficiency of logistics in the country, the Indian government launched a program to develop ** multi-modal logistics parks (MMLP) in 2017. A MMLP is a freight handling facility spanning at least 100 acres with integrated transportation modes, mechanized warehouses, and specialized storage facilities, cargo terminals, and other related facilities. By the end of 2024, locations for all ** MMLPs have been identified, and contracts for some of these locations have already been awarded.
