In 2021/2022, the production of pears in Belgium is forecast to amount to roughly ** tons. By comparison, in the same year the production volume of apples is expected to reach roughly ** tons. This is to some extent a reflection of the fruit farmland dedicated to the different fruit types. In 2021/2022, over 10,000 hectares was used for the production of pears.

 Organic fruit production

  Although organic farming is on the rise, the share of organic fruit produced in Belgium is still relatively low. For example, in 2017 the total production of organic pears amounted to roughly *** tons. The organic apple production was even lower, at nearly *** tons. This was a steep decrease in comparison to the previous year though, mainly as a result of late frost. As a share of the total production, the organic apple production was higher than the organic pear production too.  

Organic fruit farmland

  The share of land dedicated to organic fruit production was equally low in this period. In 2016, there were just under 100 hectares of organic pear farmland in Belgium. This was a significant increase in comparison to the previous years though. In 2012, there had only been ** hectares of organic farmland. A similar trend was however not visible in the organic apple farmland, which decreased by over ** hectares in the same period.
