E-bikes increasingly important

In 2023, the vast majority of bicycles sold in the Netherlands were either electric bikes or city bicycles. That year, approximately ** city bikes were sold, whereas the total sales volume of electric bikes had reached **. Over the last few years, the volume of sold city bikes decreased annually, while the number of newly sold e-bikes had been growing fast. 2023, however, also saw a decrease in the number of e-bikes sold. Nonetheless, they remained the most important segment in the Dutch bike market.

Bike imports declining

The volume of bicycles that were imported to the Netherlands decreased significantly between the period of 2020 and 2023. In 2020 the country had still imported *** million bicycles. By 2023, this figure had dropped to only *** million units.
