As of 2018, approximately **** million holidays were spent by Dutch tourists in their own country, whereas just over ** million holidays were spent abroad. Furthermore, while the domestic holidays decreased, the number of outbound holidays equaled its highest volume in the period between 2005 and 2018. The total expenditure (both inbound and outbound) amounted to approximately **** billion euros in 2018. Domestic tourism had an expenditure of roughly **** billion euros, whereas approximately **** billion euros were spent by Dutch tourists on outbound holidays.

Majority of the long-haul holidays were long haul

The majority of the holidays spent domestically and abroad were long haul holidays spent domestically and abroad were long haul (more than four days) in 2018. Approximately ** million long haul holidays were spent by Dutch tourists, whereas nearly ** million holidays were short haul. Observing the long-haul holidays to neighboring country Germany, it increased from 2015 onwards. In 2015, **** million tourists spent their holidays just over the border of the Netherlands and by 2018, this had increased to roughly **** million long haul holidays.

Holiday plans of Dutch individuals

From a survey conducted on whether Dutch individuals were going on holidays based on income status in 2019, ** percent of the respondents indicated to go on holidays with a modal income, whereas ** percent did not go on holidays and roughly *** percent did not know. The majority of the individuals with an income below modal indicated not to go on holidays, as ** percent mentioned no holidays were planned in 2019.
