Between August 5, 2016 and August 21, 2016, the Rio 2016 Olympics drew a total of 32 million Canadian TV viewers. While most of the popular games revolved around field events, the event with the highest number of daily TV viewers took place on August 18, with more than seven million people witnessing the Canadian sprinter Andre De Grasse win silver in the Men’s 200m race. Trailing slightly behind was another event featuring De Grass in the Men’s 100m on August 14, with 6.9 million viewers.

The Olympics viewing was not only limited to TV; many fans tuned in through other channels and supported their teams on social media. Between Friday’s Opening Ceremony and Sunday night, the broadcaster’s opening weekend digital coverage via CBC.ca/Olympics raked in nearly 24 million page views and more than three million video views. The Olympics fever continued with a strong online presence, as the TeamCanada hashtag generated almost 490 million online impressions during the 2016 Rio Olympics.

With regards to the Olympic Games TV coverage, the Winter Olympics, in general, attracted more Canadian viewers than the Summer Olympics. Sochi 2014, for example, recorded an average of 1.5 million viewers, whereas there were 1.27 million Rio viewers in Canada. Compared to the last Summer Olympics in London, Rio Olympics were slightly in lead, in terms of total viewers, but the average number of viewers of the Opening Ceremony dropped from six million in 2012 to four million in 2016.
