In 2022, more than 81 percent of individuals between 12 and 25 years in the Netherlands said they used internet on a laptop while respondents going online on their mobile phones in the same age group were more approximately 93 percent. Tablet usage in the examined period was especially low among younger respondents, with only approximately 33 percent of users aged between 12 and 25 years reporting using tablet devices to go online.

Online internet access in the Netherlands

In 2022, there were approximately 15.2 million internet users in the Netherlands, up by less than one percent compared to 2020. Internet usage in the country is projected to slowly grow by 1.4 percent by 2028, reaching approximately 15.4 million users. In 2022, over 98.5 percent of urban households in the Netherlands had internet access, while approximately the same number of rural households reported having internet access by the end of 2022 – approximately 98.32 percent. Additionally, approximately 15 million Dutch people had access to the internet on their mobiles in 2022.

Most popular online activities for Dutch users

In October 2022, users in the Netherlands were reported to spend roughly 65 minutes per day on social media apps, while different gaming app genres occupied users in the country for approximately 90 minutes per day on average. Search engines and online stores were the most visited website categories among Dutch users, highlighting that audiences in the Netherlands are making use of the internet’s functionalities for finding information and shopping. Among other useful or practical activities, online Dutch users seeking health information online have been growing in recent years: from approximately 52 percent in 2011 to 78 percent in 2022.
