The annual consumption volume of milk in Sweden decreased constantly in recent years. As of 2023, it amounted to a volume of almost ** liters of milk per person.

Declining milk production

In the period from 2011 to 2022, the production volume of drinking milk declined slightly in Sweden. By contrast, the share of organic drinking milk grew strongly since 2013. In 2018, a volume of around *** thousand tons of drinking milk was produced, of which a share of **** percent was organic milk. Organic milk comes from cows that are not treated with antibiotics and hormones and are on the pasture around 120 days a year.

Producer prices

The producer prices of regular drinking milk and organic drinking milk differ just a little from each other. In 2022, the producer price of organic milk in Sweden amounted to around *** Swedish kronor per 100 kilograms, whereas the producer price of conventional milk was around *** Swedish kronor per 100 kilograms. The relatively small price difference in production might be a reason for the trend of growing organic milk production in the country.
