Although the number of healthcare institutions in Belgium has decreased, the number of personnel working increased. The number of healthcare workers in Belgium in the period 2010 to 2021 has increased by around 140 thousand. Furthermore, the number of practicing nurses in Belgium increased by over 20 thousand since the year 2010.

Spending indicators on health

µþ±ð±ô²µ¾±³Ü³¾â€™s expenditure on healthcare amounted to 10.9 percent of its GDP in 2023. It has been increasing overall since 1980. In comparison to other European countries, Belgium ranked relatively high on the share of GDP spent on health expenditures. Switzerland had the highest share of expenditure on health, spending 12 percent of its GDP in the regarded year.
