Cheese consumption in Germany has remained relatively stable in recent years. Cheese is a staple in many German households among adults and children alike. In 2023, around * tons of cheese were consumed in Germany.Â
There are many types of cheese (and cheese products) found on the German market, catering to virtually every taste and preference. When breaking down per capita cheese consumption by type, semi-hard and semi-soft cheese were especially popular among German consumers, followed by cream cheese. In terms of production volume, Gouda was produced the most, with Quark (fresh cheese made by warming soured milk) or the so-called Schichtkäse (several different layers of Quark added on top of each other) and Edam rounding up the top three.
Germany also imports cheese, with the import value rising for years. The European cheese market is a thriving one, with some ** tons of cheese consumed in all of the EU.
