Gross written premiums in the motor insurance segment in Italy declined overall since the peak reached in 2013. In fact, their total value decreased from nearly **** billion euros in that year to approximately **** billion euros in 2021. Despite the decrease experienced, written premiums in the motor insurance segment still account for approximately half of the total gross written premiums in the non-life insurance sector in Italy.

Motor insurance claims in Italy

When covered by an insurance policy and involved in an accident, policyholders need to present a claim to their insurance provider in order to receive compensation for the damage occurred. After peaking at over ** in 2009, motor insurance claims notified on the Italian market declined significantly in the following years, reaching approximately * in 2018. As a consequence, a decline in motor insurance claims paid was also seen. In fact, claims paid on the Italian market peaked at over ** billion euros in 2008, before decreasing by nearly **** in the following years and reaching a value of approximately ** billion euros in 2019.

Motor insurance in Europe

Despite counting nearly 40 million insured vehicles and accounting for more than *** percent of the total written premiums on the motor insurance market in Europe, Italy is not among the three largest markets in the continent. In fact, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom all recorded higher gross written premiums in 2018.
