This statistic considers connections with a downstream speed of 1 Mbit/s or higher as broadband connections. The figures refer to the share of households that had access to broadband internet via fixed line or wireless technologies. Rural communities are defined as communities with a population density lower than 100 inhabitants per square kilometer.

According to the source, the figures for 2009 were based on a different methodology. As to this, the figures and trends based on these figures are to be handled with care.
The figures up to mid 2013 were published by BMWi. Later figures have been published by BMVI.
The source states that the base data – such as households/ residents number and administrative borders – was updated. Due to this there may be small statistical fluctuation around +/- 0.3 percent for the figures referring to Germany.
