The Consumer Electronics Market Index is focused exclusively on the consumer market (private demand). From 2010 onwards, tablets were no longer classified as notebooks. The numbers refer to average consumer prices (without subsidies) including VAT.

In 2018 revenue for desktop computers was adjusted retroactively. Accordingly average prices prior to 2017 are just partly comparable.

Citation formats

Prices fluctuated over the years, but most recently desktop PCs were more expensive than laptops. Considering that significantly more laptops have been sold in Germany than desktop computers in 2023 alone, this is not surprising.

On the go

With international mobility and traveling on the rise, as well as changing media consumption habits (to name just a few factors), exploding laptop sales and demand are a natural development. It’s not uncommon for household members to each own a laptop, and not necessarily a desktop computer. Laptops are among the most owned electronic devices in Germany, with ** percent of the population owning one. For many, they are not just an essential item for work or education, but also play an important role in personal media consumption.

Still a winner

Forecasts predict decreasing revenues of the laptop and tablet segment of the computer market in the , it’s still higher than for desktop PCs. The Germans favorite brands when it comes to laptops are Acer, Lenovo and Apple/Mac.
