The sales volume of beer in Portugal has presented fluctuations during the last decade according to the premises where it is sold. In 2019, on-trade beer volume sales accounted for their highest share, with ** percent of this alcoholic drink being sold in bars, restaurants, and hotels. By 2022, this figure dropped to ** percent, while off-trade sales, referring to supermarkets and off-licences, increased to ** percent.

Beer production intensified while imports shrank

In Portugal, the production of beer decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic, but, by 2023, it was at higher levels than in pre-pandemic times. In this year, 7.5 million hectoliters of beer were produced in the active beer breweries that exist in the country. Perhaps because of the increase in production volume, 2023 brought about a decrease in beer import volume compared to the previous year, with * hectoliters of beer being imported into Portugal.

Consumption grew to the highest value in more than a decade

Beer is one of the most consumed alcoholic drinks in Portugal, with the total annual consumption volume presenting a rising tendency during the last decade. By 2023, the Portuguese consumed over *** million hectoliters of this fermented alcoholic beverage, which was the highest value ever. The consumption per capita reached ** liters of beer in 2023, after a decrease in 2020 and 2021.
