Citation formats

In 2000/01 the number of prescription items for nicotine replacement therapies amounted to 44 thousand. By 2019/20 was 379 thousand, while the number of items prescribed peaked between these years. In 2005/06 the number of NRT prescribed came to approximately two million, this was the largest number of prescriptions during the sixteen-year period.

Stop smoking services in England

In the period 2019/20, there were over 221 thousand individuals in England who set a quit smoking date with the NHS, approximately 121 thousand were female and 100 thousand were male. Of those that set a date to quit, just over half of them had been successful at a follow up four weeks later.

Dangers of smoking

Over 1.8 million admissions to NHS hospitals in England in the financial year 2017/18 were caused by smoking. The number of admissions as a result of smoking has been creeping upwards since 2000. Consequently, the number of admissions due to cancers caused by smoking in England has increased since the year 2000, reaching almost 354 thousand in 2017/18.
