The Scottish Household Survey uses eight household types, defined as follows:
1) Single adult: household containing one adult of working age and no children.
2) Single parent: household containing one adult of any age and one or more children.
3) Single pensioner: household containing one adult of pensionable age (60 for women and 65 for men) and no children.
4) Small family: household containing two adults of any age and one or more children.
5) Older smaller: household containing one adult of working age and one of pensionable age, or two adults of pensionable age and no children.
6) Large adult: household containing three or more adults.
7) Small adult: houshold containing two adults of working age, and no children.
8) Large family: household containing two adults of any age, and three or more children, or three or more afults of any age and one or more children.
