‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ is a series comprised of five books by the author George R.R. Martin. The first book in the series entitled ‘A Game of Thrones’ was first published in 1996 and was adapted into a fantasy series by HBO productions in 2011. Due to the popularity of the TV series, Martin’s books have become top sellers and in 2013, ‘A Game of Thrones’ sold over * million units in the United States alone. The other four books from the series all featured in the top 10 selling mass-market paperback books of 2013. It has been suggested that Martin’s sales will remain popular with two more books promised in the future which will continue to inspire the TV series.
Whether or not a book’s popularity is created by a television or cinematic adaptation, reading remains a popular pastime for Americans. In March 2014, American readers were surveyed on how their reading habits had changed over the previous six months. Of respondents who stated that they now read less than they did before, ** percent were female and ** percent were male. However, ** percent of men and ** percent of women stated that their reading habits hadn’t changed and they were reading the same amount.
Innovations in technology now mean that more book forms are available to consumers, whether that is the traditional printed format, the audio book or the electronic format available via smartphones, tablets and e-readers. Six percent of women and *** percent of men in March 2014 stated that they only read e-books. In comparison, ** percent of men and ** percent of women only read hard copy books which suggest that the traditional format is still favored among readers in the United States.
