This statistic compares the number of unlicensed vehicles in traffic in Great Britain between 2008 and 2017 according to the vehicle's tax class. The estimates were calculated from the Department for Transport Roadside Survey. Private vehicles and light goods vehicles clearly formed the majority of unlicensed vehicles on the road. By 2013 there were an estimated *** thousand unlicensed passenger and light goods vehicles and ** thousand unlicensed motorcycles.
In 2017, the number of of unlicensed light goods vehicles had more than doubled to **, while the number of unlicensed HGVs and motorcycles had tripled and almost quadrupled respectively.
