India's primary energy supply increased by over percent in 2024, when compared to the previous year. The most consumed type of energy fuel in the South Asian country was coal, amounting to nearly ***exajoules that year. 

Energy in India

India has a very diverse energy sector, which uses coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear energy, hydro energy, and renewable energy. Their use of electricity has exponentially increased over the last decades. Throughout 2017, India’s electricity production remained somewhat steady from month to month. On the other hand, the amount of electricity that was generated every month from renewable sources in the country fluctuated. Renewable sources include solar energy, wind power, and tidal power.

Coal dependence

State-based grid management systems for electricity were first introduced in India in the 1960s. Since 1998, India’s coal consumption has significantly increased and it is one of the top coal producers in the world. Despite the increase in electricity access throughout India, many homes, especially in rural areas, remain without access.
