The United States has the world’s biggest economy. Its GDP surpassed** trillion dollars in 2025. It is also among the largest global exporters, with only China exporting more. In recent years, America’s exports have climbed to record highs.

Is the deficit a real problem?

The balance of trade in the United States has long been a subject of debate among economists, businesses, and politicians. When a country imports more than it exports, it runs a trade deficit. America has plenty of big export industries, yet its deficit has widened over time. Today, the U.S. runs the world’s largest trade deficit.

The question remains whether this is just harmless bookkeeping or a genuine economic constraint.
