In April 2025, the United States imposed sweeping new tariffs on imports. The president invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to establish a universal 10 percent duty and country‑specific ‘reciprocal’ tariffs. Separately, higher Section 232 tariffs on commodities such as steel and aluminum, as well as automobiles, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals, were extended or proposed, in some cases in addition to the new reciprocal duties.
