The 2021 YRBS sampling frame consisted of all regular public schools (including charter schools), parochial schools, and other private schools with students in at least one of grades 9鈥12 in the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

A 2021 survey of American high school students found that students with low levels of school connectedness were more likely to have skipped school due to feelings of being unsafe than those with high levels of school connectedness. School connectedness was defined by the survey as feeling close to the people at school.
