The prevalence of obesity in the United States has increased gradually over the past few decades. As of 2023, it was estimated that around 33 percent of the entire U.S. population was obese. This trend has impacted youth as well as adults.Â
In the states
The U.S. states with the highest percentage of the adult population who are obese include West Virginia, Mississippi, and Arkansas. In 2023, 41 percent of the population of West Virginia were considered obese. Obesity is caused by a combination of poor diet, a lack of physical exercise, and genetics. It is estimated that around a quarter of the U.S. population is physically inactive, with rates as high as 34 percent in the state of Mississippi.
