GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications), which has been the most popular mobile/wireless technology over the last few years, is forecast to decline as the HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) and LTE (Long-Term Evolution) technologies gain market share. While the number of mobile connections using GSM is forecast to decline from three billion in 2016 to *** billion in 2020, the number of HSPA connections is expected to slightly increase from *** billion in 2016 to *** billion by 2020. Meanwhile, the number of LTE subscriptions is forecast to considerably increase in the coming years from *** billion in 2015 to **** billion by 2020. LTE is forecast to become the most popular mobile technology in the world by 2020, projected to account for about ** percent of the market. HSPA is estimated to hold a share of ** percent of global mobile subscriptions, while GSM’s share is forecast to drop to ** percent.
