It is not necessarily identical to a company or enterprise, which may consist of one establishment or more. In 2009, the sector "Directory and mailing list publishers" was named "Database and directory publishers".

Whilst trends vary across each subsector in the print publishing market when it comes to the number of establishments still in operation, steady negative growth is most evident among directory and mailing list publishers. There were just *** such establishments in 2019, down from over ** in 2014. Newspaper publishers are also visibly struggling, with their numbers dropping from almost *** thousand in 2016 to in 2019.
