The share of registered adopted cats is relative to the total intakes of cats by shelters and rescues. Monthly data for intakes from more than 6,000 organizations for the years of 2016 to 2025 is included in a machine learning (ML) model to determine intake totals for all organizations across the country.
Neonate cats are cats under one month of age. Weaned cats are cats between one and two months of age. Juvenile cats are cats between two and five months of age. Adult cats are cats between five months and seven years of age. Senior cats are cats with over seven years of age.

In 2025, in the United States, ** percent of both puppies and adult dogs in shelters and rescues were adopted. Senior dogs, however, presented a lower adoption share, only ** percent.
