U.S. pet food industry - statistics & facts

Total pet market sales have steadily increased in the U.S. over the past years. Pet food and treats made up the largest share of the market in the United States with over 65 billion U.S. dollars in sales. Pet supplies, live animals, and OTC medicine followed with the second largest amount in the sector.

Pet stores and brands in the U.S.

The pet store market in the United States is a highly concentrated industry with two companies, PetSmart and PETCO Animal Supplies, accounting for almost a third of the pet store market, based on revenue in 2024. On the demand side, the most important target groups for pet store marketers were pet owners aged between 25 and 64 years, who accounted for almost 80 percent of the total pet store market. For both dry dog food and dry cat food, Nestle Purina Petcare Co. held the largest share of the market in 2024, generating over 2.7 billion U.S. dollars in dry dog food sales and around 1.8 billion U.S. dollars in dry cat food sales. Mars dominated the wet dog food category, selling almost 1.5 billion U.S. dollars during the same period.

Consumer trends

Many pet parents are now looking for healthier and more nutritious food options for their pets. After price, consumers considered health benefits and natural ingredients as the main decision factors when purchasing pet food. When asked about added nutritional values, about 40 percent of surveyed U.S. pet owners claimed to specifically look for products with high-protein content, joint care, and probiotics. Recent sales figures are also evidence of the growth of specialized dog food. In 2024, freeze-dried pet food sales in the United States grew by over seven percent in comparison to the previous year. This all shows that the pet food market is transitioning towards a more value-driven industry, bringing opportunity for smaller brands and players to enter this booming market. For instance, the American company, Freshpet, has had increased revenue due to the growing demand for premium pet food products.
