After automotive and mechanical engineering, the chemical industry is the third-largest industrial sector in Germany. It manufactures products such as paints and varnishes, mineral fertilizers and adhesives, as well as personal care products and detergents, cleaning agents, and cleaning products. In 2024, the chemical industry's largest segment sales were generated by pharmaceutical products. Chemical production is energy-intensive and therefore associated with high greenhouse gas emissions. Over the last ten years, CO₂ emissions have amounted to around ** million tons per year, although they have recently fallen below the ** million ton mark on several occasions.

As Germany is home to major international chemical and pharmaceutical companies such as BASF ��Ի��Bayer, it is one of the most important countries in the international chemical industry. The German chemical industry regularly achieves export surpluses, with exports worth around billion euros in 2024. The majority of chemical exports go to other EU countries, which are the largest sales market ahead of Asia.
